Port of Seattle Commission approves salmon habitat restoration project
Published on

The Port of Seattle Commission has approved a motion to restore a segment of Miller Creek in Burien and SeaTac to help replace a failing culvert and create approximately 137 metres of new salmon habitat on the port's property along Des Moines Memorial Drive.

Maiya Andrews, Public Works Director for the City of Burien, said the project seeks to restore Miller Creek to a more natural state by cooling and filtering the water to create additional salmon spawning habitat.

The project will relocate a deteriorating culvert near 144th Street with a new, larger culvert just south of the current location, protecting the roadway and improving fish passage.

The creek is one of the few salmon-bearing areas within the port's jurisdiction. It currently supports runs of coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch), which is partly known for its moderate to high fat content.
