Hawaii Oceanic Technology has created the Oceansphere, an 82,500-cubic metre Kevlar and aluminium sphere which promises to allow more efficient fish farming while not harming the environment.
The designers hope to shift fishing techniques away from methods that deplete fish stocks and damage ecosystems to an industry that allows fish to develop and reproduce.
Twelve Oceanspheres can produce 24,000 tonnes of fish in limited space.
The Oceanspheres can be operated in deep water and features an ocean thermal energy conversion power plant that generates all the electricity the sphere needs.
