Oregon shipbuilder Greenbrier Marine launched a new double-hull petroleum tank barge into the water at its Lake Oswego facilities on Monday, March 8.

Designed by Jensen Maritime, the shallow-draught Qamun will be operated in Alaskan waters by Crowley Fuels as part of an articulated tug and barge (ATB) unit. The ATB was specifically designed to meet ice class and polar code requirements to safely and effectively operate in Western Alaska year-round while providing protections for the environment using energy efficient, lower emission propulsion.

The vessel will be able to operate in winter ice conditions and temperatures as low as -28 degrees Celsius.

The 106-metre, 55,000-barrel Qamun is scheduled for delivery to Crowley in April 2021.
