The Washington State Legislature recently finalised a transportation appropriations package that also includes US$14 million in funding for a new all-electric Ro-Pax ferry for operation to and from Guemes Island in western Skagit County.

The new vessel is scheduled to enter service no later than 2025. It will replace the diesel-powered ferry Guemes, which has been serving its namesake island for over 40 years and is nearing the end of its operational life.

Design work on the new vessel by naval architects Glosten Associates.
