The Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation's (DEC) Diesel Emissions Reduction Program has awarded US$268,073 in grant funding to local operator Mesa Leasing to replace the four diesel engines powering the tour boat Spirit of Ethan Allen III.

The old engines will be replaced with new, cleaner engines that meet more stringent emissions standards. The new engines will eliminate an estimated 457.2 tonnes of diesel emissions, including 17 tonnes of nitrogen oxides (NOx), 0.6 tonnes of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), 0.6 tonnes of hydrocarbons, two tonnes of carbon monoxide, and 437 tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Spirit of Ethan Allen III will be operating with the new engines by May 1, 2020.
