Construction to begin on new hybrid electric ferry for Maine’s Casco Bay Lines

Shipbuilder Senesco Marine of North Kingstown, Rhode Island, will soon begun construction on a new hybrid electric, double-ended Ro-Pax ferry ordered by Casco Bay Lines of Portland, Maine.

Designed by naval architects the Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) of Seattle, the newer vessel will replace Casco Bay Lines' existing diesel-powered ferry.

The replacement ferry will have capacity for 15 vehicles and 599 passengers. Its propulsion system will consist of an ABB hybrid diesel-electric arrangement that will also be capable of shore charging.

The vessel is scheduled to enter operational service in 2024.
