Heerema Marine Contractors has completed a decommissioning project for ConocoPhillips at the Greater Ekofisk Oil Field on the Norwegian continental shelf.

The decommissioning was done on the Ekofisk 2/4A permanent production platform, which had been in operation for nearly 40 years by the time oil production finally ended in September 2013. The platform will be recycled up to 99 per cent at the AFEBV decommissioning site in Vats, Norway.

The scope of Heerema's work covered detailed engineering, preparation, removal, and disposal/recycling of five modules, a crane boom, and a burner boom within the field.

The company also developed a dedicated subsea excavator to prepare the jacket for removal later this season by the LNG-powered heavy crane vessel Sleipnir (pictured).
