Abingdon Volunteer Fire and Rescue (AVFR), a volunteer emergency service organisation based in Gloucester County, Virginia, has secured over US$500,000 in federal grant funding for the purchase of a new all-hazards response boat.

The 34-foot (10-metre) bespoke vessel, which will replace AVFR's current 1995-built boat, will be equipped for firefighting, search and rescue (SAR), and CBRNE detection.

The new boat will be built by Silver Ships of Alabama.
