Acting US Secretary of the Navy Thomas B. Modly has confirmed that the US Navy's two newest Virginia-class nuclear-powered attack submarines will be named USS Oklahoma and USS Arizona.

The names were selected to honour the 1,606 American sailors on two similarly named US Navy battleships who perished during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941.

The two submarines will be the first US Navy vessels to be named Oklahoma and Arizona in over 78 years.
