US Secretary of the Navy Kenneth J. Braithwaite has confirmed that the second Columbia-class nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine will be named in honour of the state of Wisconsin.

The vessel will be the third US Navy ship and the first submarine to be named after the thirtieth US state.

The future USS Wisconsin will have a length of 171 metres, a hull diameter of 13 metres, and space for 155 officers and enlisted sailors. It will be designed by General Dynamics Electric Boat and built by the Newport News Shipbuilding division of Huntington Ingalls Industries.
