The US Navy commissioned USS Vermont, the 19th Virginia-class fast attack submarine, on Saturday, April 18.
Although the traditional public commissioning ceremony was canceled due to public health restrictions on large public gatherings, the navy commissioned Vermont administratively and transitioned the submarine to normal operations.
Vermont is the third US Navy vessel to bear the name of the 14th US State. It has a length of 115 metres, a beam of 10.4 metres, a displacement of 7,800 tonnes, and a speed of 25 knots.
The submarine was built by General Dynamics Electric Boat (GDEB) of Groton, Connecticut.
Navy officials said that they still intend to hold a special ceremony marking Vermont's entry into service sometime in the future.
