The US Coast Guard rescued five people from a capsized recreational vessel offshore Oregon Inlet, North Carolina, on Tuesday, April 27.
The coast guard said all five survivors are safe and are being treated for hypothermia.
At approximately 17:25 local time on Tuesday, watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector North Carolina received a report from the Dare County Sheriff's Office 911 Communications Center that a 26-foot (eight-metre) recreational vessel was taking on water six miles (9.6 kilometres) from Oregon Inlet with five people on board.
A response boat–medium boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Oregon Inlet was launched to provide assistance. At 18:06, the boatcrew located the capsized vessel near the last known position provided by Dare County dispatch.
Two people were located in the water and three people were sitting on the hull of the overturned vessel. The boatcrew retrieved all five passengers and transported them to Station Oregon Inlet where they were met by local emergency medical services personnel and taken to the Outer Banks Hospital for further treatment.
Commander Courtney Sergent, Search and Rescue Mission Coordinator at Sector North Carolina, said the boaters made the prudent decision to don life jackets and stay near their capsized vessel until help arrived.
