The US Coast Guard and shipbuilder Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) christened the tenth Legend-class national security cutter in a ceremony on Saturday, June 4.
Built by HII's Ingalls Shipbuilding division, the future USCGC Calhoun honours Charles L. Calhoun, the first master chief petty officer of the US Coast Guard.
Master Chief Calhoun served in the US Navy for three years during World War II and transferred to the US Coast Guard in 1946. He held varying positions of leadership over the course of his career.
As with other Legend-class national security cutters, the future Calhoun will be capable of embarking and supporting a wide range of coast guard, navy and NATO manned and unmanned aircraft. Missions will include drug interdiction, anti-illegal fishing patrols, disaster relief, and defence support operations.
