Robert Allan Ltd bags US Navy tug design contract

Robert Allan Ltd has been awarded a contract by Modutech Marine of Tacoma, Washington, to design a new series of tugs for the US Navy.

Each vessel in the series will have an LOA of 19.2 metres, a moulded beam of 9.4 metres, and two 970kW EPA Tier IV engines that will deliver a bollard pull in excess of 30 tonnes. It will also have extensive fendering above and below the waterline to handle US Navy surface ships, submarines, and barges.

The contract includes an option for one additional tug.

Construction is expected to commence in 2020.
