Philly Shipyard in Pennsylvania has cut the first steel for the second National Security Multi-Mission Vessel (NSMV) slated for the US Department of Transportation's Maritime Administration (MARAD).

The first steel plates that have been cut will be later joined into a double bottom, mid-ship section.

The cutting of the first steel for the second NSMV comes less than three months after that of the first ship in the class. The lead vessel is scheduled for delivery in 2023.

The NSMVs will feature numerous instructional spaces and a full training bridge with accommodation for up to 600 cadets to train in a maritime academic environment at sea.

Along with serving as educational and training platforms, the NSMVs will also be available to support US federal government efforts in response to national and international disasters such as hurricanes and earthquakes. In this role as National Defense Reserve Fleet vessels, the NSMVs will each incorporate medical capabilities, a command and control platform, and berthing for up to 1,000 first responders and recovery workers.

A roll-on/roll-off ramp and crane to facilitate container storage capabilities will enable each vessel to provide critical support equipment and supplies in disaster-stricken areas.
