Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Ingalls Shipbuilding division recently cut the first 100 tonnes of steel for the US Navy's newest San Antonio-class landing platform dock (LPD), the future USS Harrisburg.
The LPD will be the second US Navy vessel to be named after the city of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, and the 14th vessel in the San Antonio-class.
HII said that, in addition to being used in major combat operations, the vessel will also be capable of carrying out humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations.
The future Harrisburg will have a length of 208 metres, a beam of 32 metres, a helicopter deck, and a well deck for accommodating smaller landing craft and amphibious assault vehicles.
