Austal USA recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the official start of construction of its first ever steel shipbuilding facility in Mobile, Alabama.

The new facility will be used for building steel vessels needed by the US Navy and Coast Guard, commented Austal USA interim president Rusty Murdaugh.

The company said production is expected to commence at the new facility in April 2022.

The facility sits on six hectares of land formerly owned by Modern American Recycling and Repair Services (MARRS). The acquired assets from MARRS include waterfront land, buildings, and a dry dock.
