Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Newport News Shipbuilding delivered the nuclear-powered attack submarine USS Montana to the US Navy on Saturday, March 12.
The future Montana, which successfully completed sea trials last month, is the tenth Virginia-class submarine to be delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding and the 21st built as part of a teaming agreement with General Dynamics Electric Boat.
The submarine is the third of the 10-ship group of Virginia-class boats known as Block IV, which incorporate design changes focused on reduced total ownership cost. HII claimed that, by making smaller-scale design changes, the navy will increase the length of time between maintenance stops and increase the number of deployments.
