ABB has been selected by US-based shipbuilder Vigor Fab as the hybrid-electric propulsion and energy storage system provider for the newest additions to the Washington State Ferries (WSF) fleet.

The propulsion and energy storage systems will be installed on the new Olympic-class vessels, each of which will have capacity for 1,500 passengers and 144 cars.

The new vessels will be able to fully operate on battery power and will have the capability to revert to hybrid mode, if required.

Delivery of the Olympic-class ferries will be from 2024 onwards.
