Fugro has completed the first phase of its marine site characterisation project for Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN) to support the BiFrost Cable System, a new undersea fibre-optic cable system that will connect the west coast of North America, Guam, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Singapore.

The transpacific route segments off the west coast of North America have now been surveyed and the project will soon continue on the Indonesia segment through the Celebes and Java Seas. ASN is installing the cable system for a consortium comprising Keppel, Facebook, and Telin to meet increased demand for broadband connectivity between the west coast of North America and Asia-Pacific.

Fugro to perform site investigation for Equinor in eastern Canada

Equinor has selected Fugro to perform a deepwater site investigation in Canada's Flemish Pass, 500 kilometres off the coast of St John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, in water depths of approximately 1,200 metres.

Fugro's field campaign will run from July until August and will entail a seabed survey, an environmental survey and a soils investigation, with client deliverables scheduled for September.

The seabed and environmental surveys will be performed using Fugro's newest autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), Echo Surveyor VIII, which is designed to capture engineering-grade bathymetric, imaging, and shallow geological feature data in deep water. The environmental survey will also utilise proprietary 3D photogrammetric methods for improved delineation of cold water corals and other benthic habitats.

The soils investigation will be performed using Fugro's proprietary seabed cone penetration test (CPT) system, which uses a coiled push rod and compact continuous thrust machine for increased efficiency and reliability.
