Huntington Ingalls Industries' (HII) Technical Solutions division has completed a strategic equity investment in Sea Machines Robotics, a Boston, Massachusetts-based autonomous technology company that specialises in advanced software for unmanned surface vessels (USVs).

The US$15 million investment is part of HII's continued expansion in the autonomous and unmanned maritime systems industry. Earlier this year, the company added additional unmanned underwater vehicle capabilities with new product lines through the March acquisition of Hydroid, a US-based subsidiary of Norway's Kongsberg.

Sea Machines said the strategic investment and associated partnership with HII will accelerate the deployment of self-piloting technologies in the rising market of unmanned naval vessels.
