Dredging to remove accumulated silt and sediments from the Ala Wai Canal in Honolulu is scheduled to start before the end of this month.
Equipment fabrication and mobilisation for the dredging started in December 2019 and will involve the removal of approximately 142,000 cubic metres of material from the canal, which was last dredged in 2002.
According to the engineering division of Hawaii's Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), dredging depths will vary from 1.8 to 3.6 metres below the mean lower low water mark. The dredged material will then be loaded onto a dump scow, which will be towed by a tug at least two times a day to an EPA-approved ocean site, known as the South O'ahu Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMS).
Hawaii Harbors Constructors will carry out the work under a US$21 million contract.
