The author is something of a fanatical Channel cruising yachtsman and writer. He follows in an eighty year tradition of compilers of this fascinating and endlessly useful "pilot".

All of Imray's pilots are impressively comprehensive and accurate. They tell you everything you need to know to navigate safely in the waters they describe. They also entertain with numerous historical, geographical and social anecdotes that make voyaging all the more interesting.

Your reviewer, who has covered large parts of the Channel by land and sea can verify its fascination. It is a wonderful area to explore and is full of character. Its maritime traditions are lengthy and strong, its people friendly and its scenery and architecture enchanting.

While beset with strong currents, large tidal ranges, rugged coastlines and often poor weather, it makes up for that with charming snug harbours and delightful restaurants, bars, museums and much more. All of these attractions and handicaps are described brilliantly in Cunliffe's delightfully whimsical way.

Available from Imray Laurie Norie & Wilson, St Ives, UK.
