The Port of Townsville's Berth 4 container and general cargo facility has been opened after the completion of an AU$40.7 million (US$31.3 million) upgrade.

The two-year project, delivered on time and under budget, has resulted in a full upgrade of the inner harbour berth so larger vessels can be accommodated and efficiency improved.

The project has doubled the capacity of Berth 4, allowing an additional two million tonnes of product per annum, and delivering a 20 per cent increase on current total port tonnage throughput capacity.

The next phase of the project is an AU$27.3 million investment into cranes and cargo-handling infrastructure at Berth 4.
