Murarrie, Queensland-based boat builder Norman R Wright and Sons recently launched the first of two new pilot boats in a series ordered by PNG Ports Corporation of Papua New Guinea.

The 14.2-metre, custom-built Siabo then underwent trials in Moreton Bay off Queensland. The builder said the successful completion of the trials convinced the customer to place an order for a third pilot boat from the same series.

Wright added that the vessel features a new design offering optimum seakeeping and efficiency in all weather conditions. A warped planing hull and new production techniques have resulted in a three-knot increase in maximum speed with 74 kW less power whilst retaining strength and providing a smoother ride.

The hull is of composite construction, made from resin-infused and pressed GRP cored panels.

Siabo's design allows for a reduced centre of gravity for superior stability, thus enhancing pilot safety when alongside ships. The side decks around the vessel are wide, flush, and unobstructed, further improving safety during transfers.

The second boat in the series is expected to be launched in May.
