Austal USA has cut the first steel for the future USS Canberra, a new Independence-class littoral combat ship (LCS).
The ship will be the second US Navy vessel to be named in honour of Australia's capital city.
The future Canberra is the 15th LCS to be built by Austal for the US Navy.
