An expert consenting panel under the New Zealand Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) has granted fast-track approval for the redevelopment of the Waitohi Picton ferry precinct and surrounding infrastructure, to allow for larger ships to berth.

The project involves construction of new terminal buildings and an overbridge. It also includes coastal reclamation, dredging of Picton Harbour, works within the Waitohi Awa, creation of seawalls, and culvert upgrades.

Resource consent applications were jointly lodged by Port Marlborough, ferry operator KiwiRail, and Marlborough District Council.

An expert consenting panel has now approved earthworks, land use, and water-related consents under the Covid-19 Recovery (Fast-track Consenting) Act 2020.
