Maintenance dredging works have been successfully completed on schedule at the Port of Mackay in North Queensland.
The dredging was in line with the Queensland Government Maintenance Dredging Strategy for Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area Ports.
About 140,000 cubic metres of natural sediment was removed from the port and placed at an approved dredge material placement area (DMPA) two kilometres north of Slade Islet. With the main dredging works completed, minor bed-levelling works can now commence.
The dredging works are part of a AU$17 million (US$13.15 million) package of infrastructure works being completed over the financial year, enhancing the port's capacity to facilitate current and future trades.
The works were carried out by North Queensland Bulk Ports Corporation (NQBP), which has managed the maintenance dredging program at the Port of Mackay for more than 60 years.
