While certain parties remain fixated on pursuing a South Coast Marine Park with sanctuary zones taking up more than 25 per cent, WAFIC has stepped up with an alternate proposal, which has been developed in consultation with the South Coast fishing industry.

In a somewhat unorthodox approach, WAFIC has based its proposal on science and consultation. This may sound like a foreign language to some in government and within the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, but science is really the only way you can manage marine parks.

WAFIC's proposal allows for a 10.7 per cent sanctuary zone allocation, with the zones placed in areas with significant biodiversity.

WAFIC Chief Executive Darryl Hockey said that while the industry proposal would still create enormous hardship for local fishers, it would at least allow the industry to survive, albeit in a reduced capacity.

The industry proposal put forward by WAFIC is a very constructive path forward, which delivers strong environmental outcomes, protects local fishing and local socioeconomic benefits, while still ensuring the broader community can maintain access to fresh WA seafood.
