Shanghai-based Jiangnan Shipyard has launched a new research ship that will boast improved underwater noise reduction features.

The vessel, named Dong Fang Hong 3, will be the largest of its kind in the world with an LOA of 103 metres, a beam of 18 metres, and a displacement of approximately 5,800 tonnes.

Jiangnan Shipyard claims the vessel is the first in China and the fourth overall in the world to receive Silent-R certification, the highest standard for underwater noise control to be issued by DNV GL.
