Ah, the good old days. The Memoir Club, appropriately, seems to have an endless supply of talented authors with extensive maritime experience.
We who follow are fortunate indeed to be able to learn from their experiences. It is a great pity that so few modern mariners actually read these excellent books. All that wasteful re-inventing of the wheel!
This is another good example. The author's career at sea commenced at the pre-sea college HMS 'Conway' in 1955. It largely encompassed the decline and near disappearance of the British shipping industry fifty years on.
It was a great life while it lasted. The author describes it well focussing, as he does, on his time as a cadet. A very good time, it would seem.
