This book is a collection of papers that were largely inspired by the Indian Ocean tsunami of 2004. It has been made all the more appropriate by recent events in Japan.

While focussed on India and its reactions and response to the tsunami, it is almost equally appropriate to all developing nations that are vulnerable to tsunamis and similar disturbances. In India, as in many countries, particularly in Asia, a significant proportion of the population lives close to the coast. This is a very important reality.

It is good, therefore, to see that a group of appropriately qualified academics have carefully examined all the ramifications of this, both good and bad.The resulting compilation of essays is carefully considered and thought provoking. It provides a good foundation for policy making about coastal zone management.
