Shin Yang launches ‘Danum 143’

Simple new tug from Shin Yang Shipyard

The 'Danum 143' is the latest tug from Malaysian shipbuilder Shin Yang Shipyard. This simple yet effective vessel was built to a design by local naval architecture firm United Ship Design and features a conventional tug profile.

The all-steel vessel has a measured tonnage of 173GRT, an overall length of 26.8 metres and a beam of 7.32 metres. The depth to main deck is 3.65 metres and design draught is 3.0 metres.

Designed and built to meet Bureau Veritas classification standards, the tug has a bollard pull of 16 tonnes and reached a maximum speed of 10 knots during sea trials, driven by twin 475kW Cummins KTA19-M3 main engines.

Each engine drives through an MG5222DC gearbox to turn a fixed-pitch propeller mounted on either side of the vessel's large skeg. Twin 35kW diesel gen-sets provide the vessel with its electrical power, while a fuel capacity of 160 cubic metres ensures a significant range.

The vessel's main deck runs the whole length of the vessel with no forecastle. It is outfitted with a towing hook aft and tow bits on the raised bow along with a double-gypsy anchor windlass.

The central superstructure incorporates the tug's twin funnels at its aft end while forward provides accommodation space for the vessel's 10-person crew. Additional crew berths are provided below and are placed forward in the hull. A starboard side internal stairwell leads up to the second deck wheelhouse.

The wheelhouse, which can also be accessed from external stairways, has been arranged for single-person operations with a central control station forward. A modern electronics package has been fitted that includes radar, sounder and GPS supplied by Furuno.

'Danum 143' has been built for operation by Shin Yang Shipyard's sister company Shin Yang Shipping. Her no-nonsense profile proves simplicity is the hallmark of effective tug design. She joins a fleet of more than 200 vessels ploughing the waters of Southeast Asia and the Middle East, and will soon be engaged in a wide variety of cargo and offshore operations.
