Netherlands-based companies Value Maritime (VM) and Carbon Collectors will jointly perform a conceptual design study for a new fleet of tugs fitted with CO2 capture technology.
The partners will work together to investigate the feasibility of capturing carbon onboard the new marine gas oil (MGO) fueled tugs using VM's proprietary technology to ultimately ensure that Carbon Collectors' fleet is CO2 neutral from the outset.
Jointly, the two teams will investigate and determine:
Construction of the first tugs is scheduled to start in the first quarter of 2024. The partners expect all vessels to be operational by 2026.
The CO2 capture feature on each tug will remove and store carbon from the vessel's exhaust gases and use it to charge a CO2 battery that can be offloaded and re-used to facilitate the growth of crops, to enrich future fuels, or safely stored until needed.
