Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and Japanese biotechnology company Euglena have completed sea trials of a new type of renewable biodiesel fuel made from a mixture of algae and used cooking oil.
The fuel was trialled on 13 Tamashio, a tug operated by MOL Group subsidiary Green Kaiji Kaisha, in the waters of the Port of Nagoya.
Euglena claims the biodiesel is a low-environmental impact fuel, containing no sulphur and producing significantly lower levels of greenhouse gases.
