World’s largest STS cranes arrive at MedPort Tangier

Three of the world's largest container-handling cranes have arrived at APM Terminals' MedPort Tangier in Morocco.

The terminal, set to open in 2019, will be equipped with the latest cargo handling technology to serve the needs of large ships.

Designed to handle vessels carrying 22,000 or more containers, the 144-metre-high (when boomed up) cranes are the world's largest double-trolley (STS) cranes that weigh 2500 metric tonnes and have an outreach of 72 metres with twin-lift/tandem lift capability.

The remote-controlled cranes are the first three of 12 ordered with 32 automated rail-mounted gantry cranes (ARMG) in 2016 for the terminal.

Manufactured by ZPMC in Shanghai, China, the STS cranes will give the facility on the Strait of Gibraltar an annual container throughput capacity of 5,000,000TEU.
