Port of Gothenburg to offer shore charging for tankers

Baird Maritime

The Port of Gothenburg will commence operations of new shore power charging facilities for use by tankers beginning in 2023.

The port authority expects the charging facilities will help reduce carbon emissions from vessels by as much as 1,800 tonnes per year.

The installation of shore charging capability is in line with the port's objective of reducing carbon emissions by 70 per cent through to 2030.

The investment in shoreside power at the Port of Gothenburg Energy Port is partly financed by Klimatklivet, a Swedish investment support initiative. The project has been granted SEK10.7 million (US$1.26 million).

The port already offers shore charging facilities for both Ro-Pax and Ro-Ro vessels berthing at Majnabbe, Masthugget, and Älvsborgshamnen.
