Authorities in central Bangladesh have confirmed that 26 people were killed after an overloaded speedboat capsized and sank in the waters of the Madaripur district on Monday, May 3.

The vessel capsized shortly after it struck a moored bulk carrier on the Padma River some 63 kilometres south of the country's capital of Dhaka.

Search and rescue (SAR) teams that were despatched to the area found five survivors and 26 deceased individuals. The survivors have since been brought to hospital.

A rescue diver said that they found the boat was split into two pieces when they arrived at the scene.

Police officials said other passengers and crew are still missing.

The search for the boat's missing occupants is still ongoing as an investigation has been launched to identify the events that led to the crash.
