Mitsubishi Shipbuilding recently launched a new cargo and passenger vessel to be jointly owned by ferry operator Tokai Kisen and the Japan Railway Construction, Transport, and Technology Agency (JRTT).
The ferry has been christened Salvia Maru, making it the third Tokai Kisen vessel to be so named.
Delivery is scheduled for June 2020, after which the ferry will enter service on a regular route connecting Tokyo with the Tokyo Islands of Oshima, Toshima, Niijima, Shikineshima, and Kouzushima.
Salvia Maru is 118 metres long and 17 metres wide with a gross tonnage of approximately 6,200 tonnes. It will have capacity for 1,343 passengers and 38 cargo containers and a cruising speed of around 20 knots.
