Italian shipbuilder Vittoria has signed a contract with Greece's Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy for the construction and delivery of three new patrol vessels for the Hellenic Coast Guard.
The vessels will be used to patrol the EU's external maritime borders as well as conduct limited search and rescue (SAR) under the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, also known by its French name Frontières extérieures (Frontex)
The total purchase cost is estimated to be approximately €42 million (US$47.88 million), around 90 per cent of which will be shouldered by Frontex.
Delivery of all three vessels is scheduled for 2020.
