Romanian yard floats out future Norwegian Coast Guard multi-role vessel

Baird Maritime

Vard Tulcea in Romania has floated out the lead unit of a new class of three multi-role vessels slated for the Norwegian Coast Guard.

Once completed, the first Jan Mayen-class vessel will have a length of 136.4 metres, a beam of 22 metres, a displacement of 9,800 tonnes at full load, and an ice-strengthened hull. Secondary missions will include surveillance, oil spill recovery, and search and rescue.

The hull will later be transported to Vard's Langsten facilities in Norway for further tests and completion.

The three Jan Mayen-class vessels will be delivered to the coast guard at a rate of one every year beginning in 2022.
