Turkey's Gölcük Naval Shipyard launched a new submarine for the country's navy on Sunday, December 22.
The 68-metre, 1,800-tonne submarine, which will be named Piri Reis after a famed Ottoman naval officer and cartographer, is the first of six Type 214 vessels to be constructed by Gölcük with cooperation from German shipbuilder Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW).
The future TCG Piri Reis is expected to enter service in 2022. The five other submarines in the class will be commissioned at a rate of one per year from 2023 to 2027.
