The US Navy commissioned the guided missile destroyer USS Daniel Inouye in a ceremony at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii on Wednesday, December 8.

The Arleigh Burke-class destroyer is named in honour of the late US Senator Daniel Inouye, who served as a Hawaii representative in the Senate from 1963 until he died in 2012. The late Senator Inouye had also served as a US Army officer and was subsequently awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II.

Built by General Dynamics Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, Daniel Inouye was christened on June 22, 2019, and delivered to the navy on March 8, 2021.
