The Royal Navy has unveiled the names of its future Type 31 air warfare frigates, which will also be known as the Inspiration-class.

First Sea Lord Admiral Tony Radakin has said that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has approved the names Active, Bulldog, Campbeltown, Formidable, and Venturer for the new ships that are slated to replace some of the navy's 1990s-era Type 23 frigates.

All five Inspiration-class vessels will be assembled at the Babcock yard in Rosyth, where a new construction hall is nearing completion. The first steel is due to be cut on the ships this summer.

The five Type 31 frigates will operate alongside the Type 26 or City-class frigates, which will be dedicated anti-submarine warfare ships.
