Baird Maritime

The final one of ten FREMM multi-purpose frigates ordered by the Italian Navy was launched at the Riva Trigoso facilities of Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in a ceremony on Saturday, May 25.

The vessel is the second FREMM frigate to bear the name Emilio Bianchi. The first FREMM frigate named Emilio Bianchi had been sold to Egypt, and has since been renamed and commissioned into service as ENS Bernees.

Upon completion, the new Emilio Bianchi will have a length of 144 metres, a full load displacement of approximately 6,700 tonnes, accommodations for 200 crew and other personnel, and a maximum speed of 27 knots. Armament will include a 76mm naval gun, two 25mm autocannons on remote weapon stations, anti-ship missiles, and torpedoes.

The ship will also have a helicopter deck with hangar and space for one rigid inflatable boat to be used for at-sea interceptions and boardings.
