From Baird Maritime
March 1943 was, near enough, the turning point in the Battle of the Atlantic when the Allies began to gain the upper hand over the Axis U Boats.
It was fortunate that this was so as the Nazis sank 97 Allied merchant ships in the first three weeks of March. Indeed, 42 U-Boats were assigned to destroy these two convoys. They managed to sink 21 of their ships. A horrifying result.
This "chicken-shoot", more properly a blood bath, is graphically and dramatically described here. With it, the author also analyses the problems with the convoy system and describes how they were eventually solved.
An excellent record of a vital period of naval history.
