Construction begins on new hybrid ferry for Torghatten Nord

Poland's Remontowa Shipbuilding has cut the first steel to be used for the construction of a new hybrid, double-ended Ro-Pax ferry ordered from the company by Norwegian transport operator Torghatten Nord.

The ferry will be the ninth vessel Remontowa will build for the same owner following earlier ferries that were delivered from 2010 to 2013.

The completed vessel will have an LOA of 63.65 metres, a beam of 15.5 metres, and capacity for 149 passengers as well as 50 cars and six trailers. The batteries have shore charging capability and will provide the primary power supply, though generators will also be installed to serve as backup.

The ferry is designed for operation in the Stornes-Bjørnerå route in the Arctic Circle with each one-way trip taking no more than 12 minutes. Delivery is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.

Design work on the ferry will be provided by The Norwegian Ship Design Company.
