Twelve people are confirmed to have died after a tour boat capsized in a river in Hebei province in northern China on Saturday, April 13.

The unidentified vessel was transporting passengers on the Qinlong River near the village of Qinhuangdao when the incident occurred at around 14:30 local time on Saturday.

Rescuers aboard response boats and fire engines were despatched to the area soon afterwards to render assistance.

All 31 of the boat's passengers were pulled out of the water. Tragically, however, 12 individuals died as they were being treated in hospital.

Of the 19 survivors, 10 are still hospitalised, though their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Local officials said that the vessel was illegally modified to enable it to sail on sightseeing trips and that some of the passengers were not wearing lifejackets at the time of the capsizing.

The owner of the vessel and some other individuals have since been taken into police custody as part of the investigation into the incident.
