Sri Lanka ferry capsizing leaves six dead, 10 others missing

Six people including four children were killed after a ferry capsized and sank in Trincomalee in eastern Sri Lanka on Tuesday, November 23.

The incident occurred at 07:30 local time on Tuesday as the vessel was sailing near the Kurinchankerny Bridge in Kinniya.

The Sri Lanka Navy immediately deployed rescue boats and divers to the scene to render assistance. A total of 26 survivors were pulled out of the water and were later brought to various hospitals for treatment.

Ten other people who were on the ferry are still missing. However, the navy called off the search after six bodies were recovered from the river.

A local police official said the cause of the capsizing has not yet been identified.
