A total of 60 people are confirmed dead while more than 80 others have been reported as missing after a river boat sank in the Nigerian state of Kebbi on Wednesday, May 26.

Local officials said the vessel broke apart and sank after it struck a submerged object while sailing along the Niger River.

Search and rescue/recovery teams have pulled 60 bodies out of the water near the accident site by the afternoon (local time) of Friday, May 28. Meanwhile, only 22 survivors have been reported among the more than 160 people who were on board the boat when it sank.

A local official said recovery efforts are still ongoing but are being hampered by the river's changing tide and strong current.

The vessel was traveling between the states of Niger and Kebbi with the town of Wara as its final destination.
